Rob Bernosky  - Successful Businessman and Public Service

One of four children in a middle class family, I spent all 17 years of school walking to a public elementary, middle, high school and then as a business major at the University of Delaware from my home in Newark, Delaware.  My father was an engineer for the DuPont Company and my mom was a piano teacher for 50 years.  I came to California due to the confluence of two events; a company headquartered in Delaware interviewed me on campus to join a subsidiary they had just acquired in Los Angeles, and the summer before I met a girl who was going to San Diego State and had continued to date long distance.  That girl, Jenny, is now my wife of 21 years.  We moved from Southern California to San Benito County when our first child was born, primarily because we wanted to raise our children in a rural area.

I joined a classic pre-revenue Silicon Valley start up that was based in Hollister.  There we grew the business to over 50 employees before being acquired by a publically traded entity.  Some us from that company then founded a successful investment banking firm that assisted entrepreneurial companies in acquiring capital and in mergers & acquisitions.  Many of our engagements led to taking management and/or board positions in client companies.  Including those engagements, I have been the chief financial officer of 7 different successful companies and advised many more.  My career has spanned the semiconductor, software, capital equipment, personal electronics, pharmaceutical, recreation equipment, financial services, and research and development industries.  In general, I had been introduced to all of my companies because they were troubled or experiencing growth issues, and then was part of the team to turn them around into profitable entities with successful outcomes.  In one CFO position, I commuted cross country from 2003-2008 to assist a company that was initially in dire straits but turned it around before selling a controlling interest to a private equity firm.

My wife has been an elementary school teacher since 1988 and is now principal of a K-8 school in San Benito County.  Jenny’s mother was an elementary school teacher, as is one of Jenny’s sisters and brother-in-law.  We have a senior (Hannah) and a sophomore (McKenna) at San Benito High School and a 6th grader (Grant) at Spring Grove School.  Hannah is now applying to universities around the country.

I have been an elected trustee of the North County Joint Union School District, with a demographic that mirrors San Benito County.  During my tenure, we saw tremendous improvement in academic performance, as measured in our state rating going from a 2 to a 10 of 10, an increase in enrollment, and the passing of a bond measure for school modernization.  As a board member and since, I have fought to have San Benito County’s Committee on School District Organization established and now sit on that committee and is its president.  I sit on the board of and am president of a community water company that delivers domestic water to residents and a 730 student school.

I also am a trained Boy Scout Leader and treasurer of 70 boy Troop 400 in Hollister.  Our family is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollister, and we are active volunteers at San Benito High School.
